What are we doing this week?
HORN ·         This week in Math we will finish up a mini-lesson on how to represent a large amount of data on a bar graph. We will also begin investigating a line plot and how it is different from a bar graph and pictograph. The word “interpret” will be added to our math vocabulary wall and we will discuss it in context with the graphing unit. Students will spend a couple of days interpreting various data from graphs and answering questions with a partner. ·         The student work on the layers of the Earth is up in our room and we are proud of our work! Students worked hard to create their posters and decorate them! This week we will continue to learn all about the 3 different types of rocks and the rock cycle. We will begin with inventing our own definition of sedimentary rock, metamorphic rock, and igneous rock via research on iPads. Students will also learn about minerals this week. After we’ve read in our Science books about minerals, and taken some notes in our Science journals, students will participate in a minerals scavenger hunt!	WOODS ·         This week we are beginning a thrilling novel study of the book Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner. Our focus skills during this unit are to respond in writing to our close reading of the text, and to understand our vocabulary terms in context. We will use a format that we will refer to as IRSC to help us with the responding! IRSC stands for Indent, Restate Question, Supporting Details and Evidence, and Closing Sentence. Participating in a novel study will also provide student with excellent opportunities to learn and practice critical thinking skills and literary discussion skills! ·         We will continue to practice forming possessive nouns. ·         Students will also receive a new spelling list that focuses on reviewing long vs. short vowel sounds with doubling and dropping rules. HOMEWORK
WOODS: -Students must read for 20 minutes each night & record the number of pages they have read in the Agenda/Husky  Pad. Remember, we are now having students to log their at home reading in the very last section of the Agenda. Students should be recording the title of the book they read and the pages they’ve read.- Students will also be required to practice a using the IRSC format to respond to a question in a paragraph either Wednesday or Thursday night. HORN: Students must complete 30 minutes of Dreambox this week at home. Additional (low amount of problems) homework may be given if the teacher sees the need for practice of a particular skill. Remember Dreambox records time from Sunday to Saturday.
Tests HORN: No tests this week. WOODS: Spelling Test on Thursday.

What are we doing this week?
HORN ·         This week in Math we will talk about how large amounts of data are represented on a pictograph. We will use our own data from class birthdays to create our own bar graph. We will also talk about how to record large amounts of data on a bar graph. This encourages students to focus on the scale and interval on a graph and know why they are important. After a discussion on interval and scale, we will create a bar graph for all of the birthdays on our Purple Hall at Paine Intermediate. (This forces students to focus on how they will create a scale and interval that will represent a large amount of data).   ·         Students have had the chance to conduct two separate experiments using the Scientific method. Ask them about the Gobstoppers! This week we will be finishing up a Graphic Organizer from a nonfiction story as well as creating a poster illustrating what we’ve learned about the inner Earth. Upon completing our poster we will begin talking about one of Earth’s materials, ROCKS! We will learn all about the 3 different types of rocks and the rock cycle through watching videos, taking notes, and reading articles.	WOODS ·         We will begin an exciting narrative nonfiction unit built around the story Bat Loves the Night by Nicola Davies. This informational text presents information in the form of a story.  This story begins on p.200 of our Storytown book (with the bulldog cover). . We will use the reading skill of sequencing to help us comprehend the text. This unit will also provide several opportunities for our kids to interact with various nonfiction texts about bats in order to build background knowledge about our topic. This will also allow students to apply the knowledge they constructed last week about nonfiction texts and their features! ·         We will discuss practice forming possessive nouns ·         Students will also receive a new spelling list that focuses on words silent consonants. We will also look at words with diagraph ph and the (f) sound. Here’s the Spelling City link for practice: spellingcity.com/paine3. We are currently on the Unit 1 Lesson 5 list. ·         To stay fresh on the Map Skills we learned in a previous unit, we will discuss Continents and Oceans during a portion of our Daily Schedule called Daily Geography.
HOMEWORK

Remember, we are now having students to log their at home reading in the very last section of the Agenda. Students should be recording the title of the book they read and the pages they’ve read. -Students will receive a Continents and Oceans sheet on Monday to complete at home. It is due FRIDAY.   HORN: Students must complete 30 minutes of Dreambox this week at home. Additional (low amount of problems) homework may be given if the teacher sees the need for practice of a particular skill. Remember Dreambox records time from Sunday to Saturday.
Tests HORN: No tests this week.   WOODS: Spelling Test will be on Thursday; Vocabulary and Sequencing Quiz on Friday; Continents and Oceans Quiz Friday.

What are we doing this week?
HORN ·         This week in Math we will wrap up our Math Menu and turn in problems to be graded. We will also complete our problem solving unit assessment. After the assessment we will jump right into our graphing unit. We will explore different types of graphs this week (bar graphs pictographs, etc.) We will discuss the difference between area and volume and investigate two and three dimensional figures.   ·         Our 7 habit books are on display in my room and we are so proud of our hard work!   ·         This week in Science we will begin learning about the layers of the Earth. Students will read articles, watch videos, record definitions, and illustrate a cover page all about the layers of the Earth!	WOODS ·         This week we begin a unit on features of nonfiction text! It is our goal in this unit to lead students to notice the different features that are included in a nonfiction text such as captions, glossaries, and graphs to name a few. Students will become familiar with the correct terminology for these features and use those features to aid their understanding of various nonfiction texts! ·         We will discuss different types of nouns including plurals, common, and proper nouns in language. ·         Students will also receive a new spelling list that focuses on words with long (a) sound with ai and ay spellings, examples= Spain and gray.. We will also practice spelling words with the long (e) sound at the end with a (y) spelling, example=candy. l. Here’s the Spelling City link for practice: spellingcity.com/paine3. We are currently on the Unit 1 Lesson 4 list.
