November 10th  – November 14th
What are we doing this week?
HORN ·          This week in Math start our fluency PowerPoint and learn new strategies for various multiplication facts. Be looking out for the parent letter regarding multiplication. It’s very important! J I hope you will join us in encouraging the STRATEGIES at home with the multiplication facts. Next week we will focus on the 1’s and 2’s.   ·          We will also continue our big dinner unit. Students will investigate further with ratio tables and number relationships. We will have two sessions of Math Congress to discuss the strategies that we used to fill in the ratio table. I will be putting an example of the ratio table and various strategies on the blog for your reference. Students still must do their 30 minutes of Dreambox this week! Remember time is recorded from Sunday to Saturday!   ·          This week in Science we will continue our human body unit. Your student has discussed, investigated, and written about the importance of their hand joints. Ask them about their tasks they tried to do with their joints taped up! J	WOODS ·          This “week” we will continue to sharpen our comprehension skills as we read a variety of nonfiction texts! As we read these texts, we will learn how to properly take notes. This is an important skill that students will need for the duration of their academic careers and beyond! ·          This week in language, we will review all verbs (action, linking, and helping verbs). ·          Spelling will pick back up on November 17th! We will be on Unit 3 Lesson 1 at that timeJ.
HOMEWORK
WOODS: -Reading and Logging: Students must read for 20 minutes each night & log information about their reading on the new reading log!  This log requires them to record the title of the book they read and the pages they’ve read. They will also be asked to indicate whether they understood what they’ve read. -Nonfiction Research Project:  We will soon begin an exciting new writing project! Students will be given the opportunity to choose a nonfiction topic to research and become an “expert” on. They will also have the chance to compile their research into an original writing piece that will be used to teach others about the topic they have chosen! Here is what I need from you:  Please help them to find a book on their topic. Your child should have a book on their topic by November 17th in their nonfiction AR reading range. HORN: Students must complete 30 minutes of Dreambox this week at home. Additional (low amount of problems) homework may be given if the teacher sees the need for practice of a particular skill. Remember Dreambox records time from Sunday to Saturday.
Tests HORN: Students will NOT have a daily math skills assessment this week. No assessments for my class this week because the week is so short!    WOODS: No Assessments!

November 3rd  – November 7th
What are we doing this week?
HORN ·         This week in Math we will begin a new unit in multiplication called The Big Dinner. Students will work to figure out the price of a turkey, using various strategies they’ve invented so far. On the following day we will also have a gallery walk and a math congress as well. Students will also engage in a lesson that encourages the usage of ratio tables. We will start our fluency PowerPoint and learn new strategies for various multiplication facts. ·         This week in Science we will continue our human body unit. We’ve been discussing our joints and how important they are to help us to everyday activities. This week students will engage in several tasks in Science that help demonstrate the importance of our joints, their role in helping our body move, and joint names.	WOODS ·         This week we will review information and vocabulary from last week’s novel study of the book Tornado by Betsy Byars to prepare for an assessment on Tuesday. ·         This week in language, we will practice identifying and using linking verbs. ·         We will review the skills from our Unit 1 and Unit 2 Spelling lists before moving to the next skill. HOMEWORK
WOODS: -Students must read for 20 minutes each night & record the number of pages they have read in the Agenda/Husky Pad. -New!!  PLEASE CAREFULLY READ THE INFORMATION REGARDING THE CHANGES TO EXPECTATIONS FOR NIGHTLY READING AND LOGGING: This trimester we will try something new with the logging of our reading. Students will now be asked to log their nightly reading on a biweekly reading log. They will still be required to record the title of the book they read and the pages they’ve read, but they will also be asked to record information about their comprehension. Each night they will indicate whether they understood what they’ve read, and once a week they will be asked to demonstrate their comprehension of what they have read by writing a short reflection on their reading. More details will follow soon! HORN: Students must complete 30 minutes of Dreambox this week at home.
