Weekly Newsletter March 3rd - 6th


March 3rd  - 6th
What are we doing this week?
HORN
This week in math we will continue our fraction unit.
 
Learning Targets
·         I can recognize equivalent fractions and explain why.
·         I can represent fractions on a number line.
·         I can generate equivalent fractions.
 
In Science we have two more days on our matter unit. When we finish that, we will move on to our chemical reaction kit.
 
 
 
WOODS
This week we will continue a brief Beverly Cleary Unit. We will read the story Ramona’s World. We will also begin ACT Aspire by discussing functional texts and practicing responding to narrative prompts.
LEARNING TARGETS
·          Analyze functional texts
·          Write a narrative essay using prompts.
·          Use a checklist to edit and revise my writing.
·          Students will also receive a spelling list that includes words with prefixes .Here’s the Spelling City link for practice: spellingcity.com/paine3. We are currently on the Unit 5 Lesson 2  list.
HOMEWORK
WOODS:
-Students must read for 20 minutes each night & Log on their Biweekly Reading Log. The Reading is Thinking Homework on the back of their log must also be completed this week
 
HORN:
Students must complete 30 minutes of Dreambox this week at home. Additional (low amount of problems) homework may be given if the teacher sees the need for practice of a particular skill. Remember Dreambox records time from Sunday to Saturday.
Tests
HORN: Students will have a P.U.M.P. exam on Friday. This will be the one from the previous week that we were unable to take because of weather interruptions.   
 
WOODS: Spelling Assessment Thursday. NO VOCABULARY ASSESSMENT

What are we doing this week?
HORN
This week in math we will continue our fraction unit.

·         I can use fractions to describe parts of a whole.
·         I can represent fractions on a number line.
·         I can express whole numbers as fractions.
 
·         I can defend whether a material is a solid, liquid, or gas.
 
 
 
We will pick up with Science Thursday. We will be discussing physical and chemical changes.  
 
WOODS
This week we will begin a brief Beverly Cleary Unit. We will read the story Ramona Quimby, Age 8.
 
LEARNING TARGETS
·         Review story elements such as character, setting, problem, and solution.
·         Begin a character analysis of the character Ramona Quimby.

  • This week in Science we will end our discussion of the moon/space and begin physical and chemical changes.

WOODS
This week we continue our Great Depression Unit. We will focus on a historical fiction story titled "The Babe and I". 
LEARNING TARGETS

·         Identify facts and opinions
·         Write facts and opinions
·         Create a timeline using dates from a biography.



  • Students will also receive a spelling list that includes words with Greek and Latin roots .Here’s the Spelling City link for practice: spellingcity.com/paine3. We are currently on the Unit 4 Lesson 4 list.

WOODS
This week we continue our Great Depression Unit.

LEARNING TARGETS
·          Gain background knowledge of The Great Depression.
·          Use knowledge of The Great Depression to write a historical fiction piece of writing.
·         Students will also receive a spelling list that includes words with –ity, -less, -ness, and -sion .Here’s the Spelling City link for practice: spellingcity.com/paine3. We are currently on the Unit 4 Lesson 3 list.
