Weekly Newsletter 9/29-10/3

September 29th- October 3rd
What are we doing this week?
HORN
·         This week in Math we will work on our Graphing Math Menu.
·          Students will also complete the Graphing Unit Assessment.
·         On Friday, students will be given a vocabulary assessment from our graphing unit. Study aide for that test will come home Monday 9/29.

·         Students have been observing minerals and taking a closer look at them outside. We’ve discussed how they make up different rocks, the rock cycle, and luster. This week we will take a closer look at the process of weathering by completing a hands on activity as well as engage in a rock cycle scavenger hunt as a review for all we’ve learned thus far.
WOODS
·         This week we continue our novel study of the book Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner. Our focus skills during this unit are to respond in writing to our close reading of the text, and to understand our vocabulary terms in context. We will use a format that we will refer to as IRSC to help us with the responding! IRSC stands for Indent, Restate Question, Supporting Details and Evidence, and Closing Sentence. Participating in a novel study will also provide student with excellent opportunities to learn and practice critical thinking skills and literary discussion skills!

·         We will practice identifying pronouns.
·         Students will also receive a new spelling list that includes words with tri-graph igh and that have suffixes. Here’s the Spelling City link for practice: spellingcity.com/paine3. We are currently on the Unit 2 Lesson 1 list.

HOMEWORK
WOODS:
-Students must read for 20 minutes each night & record the number of pages they have read in the Agenda/Husky  Pad. Remember, we are now having students to log their at home reading in the very last section of the Agenda. Students should be recording the title of the book they read and the pages they’ve read.

HORN: Students must complete 30 minutes of Dreambox this week at home. Additional (low amount of problems) homework may be given if the teacher sees the need for practice of a particular skill. Remember Dreambox records time from Sunday to Saturday.
Tests
HORN: Graphing Unit Assessment will be given at the conclusion of menu. Students will also be given a vocabulary test for our math terms that we learned during the graphing unit. List of terms will go home Monday and test will be Friday.
